Which is Irish for: I am good :)

Rag-week

Rag-week is over and boy, what a week indeed. Doing the sensible thing, I just went out on two of the nights during the entire week but didn’t get much sleep the other nights anyway because of my partying housemates. It was a lot of fun though! The entire college is prepared for this amazing week! Teachers won’t expect much of you during classes as they know you’ve been out drinking the night before destroying your brain cells :P

Anyway, The Tuesday-night was a ‘Trinity rooms’ night. We all were at a friend’s place to drink and have fun before actually going to Trinity and when it was about 23:00 we went out on the street where taxies were already waiting for us. :) It was a lot of fun but not so much for me :P I found out that it isn’t really difficult to ‘hook up’ with someone and if you’re out there looking for romance (well, I wouldn’t really call it romance ‘cause there’s nothing romantic about it.. but still) you will definitely find it. Everywhere I saw people making out.. :s After losing all three of my international friends to some Irish guys and after having been asked whether I would like to go “dancing” a couple of times (by some Irish blokes), I thought it was time for me to leave… So this was a short night for me.

Thursday night we went to Angel lanes which is a much nicer club! Laser shows and everything. The theme of this night was ‘Mardi Gras’ and this time I ‘lost’ just two of the four friends to a couple of Irish blokes :P We all went home in the same taxi this time though.

The apartment during Rag-week was an absolute mess! My roommates only had microwavable food, didn’t clean, had pizza or McDonalds practically every night of the week and pizzaboxes and left-overs were scattered everywhere. They did clean up a little though just before leaving for home on Friday. (thank god for that) But I guess this is the ‘way to go’ during Rag-week.

Academic life

I am starting to enjoy more and more of my classes at Mary I! Most of the Classes are very interesting and some of them are even useful :P I absolutely LOVE the Irish-language (or Gaelic) classes! The teacher is really funny and I like learning a bit more about this ancient and official (!) language. It’s really a shame when you find out that a lot of Irish people can’t speak the language and couldn’t be bothered by actually learning it. During the coming week the Irish people have to vote for a new parliament and one of the parties wants to give people free choice whether their children should learn Irish in primary and secondary schools or not… Our Irish teacher(s) are afraid that a lot of parents will chose for their children not to learn the language because it isn’t used a lot anyway, which will eventually mean that the Irish language might die out completely.

The psychology classes I take here (Biological psychology and Social psychology) are really interesting as well. The teachers make it even more interesting though as both books are really technical. Then there’s also an EAP class (English for Academic Purposes) especially for non-native speakers of English which is really REALLY boring! I am already familiar with the topics we discuss during this class and I’m not sure if I will learn anything ‘new’ during these classes but I’ll do my best to pick up any new words or collocations and will hang on to the course for the time being.

Killarney

Last weekend we’ve been on a trip to Killarney. (For those hopeless romantics out there: this is where parts of the movie: “P.S. I love you” were shot.) It truly has a beautiful national park and this was the first time I actually felt I was in Ireland. It’s really pretty :) Caitlyn and I rented a bike and we’ve seen a lot of beautiful places and sights to see. Had a lot of fun as well as Caitlyn didn’t really know how to ride a bike (let alone a bike with gears!) and I had to teach her before we could even go anywhere. Unfortunately, her condition isn’t one to write home about either and she had to stop every couple of minutes or so. (In the end we could’ve seen a lot more) But it was all in good fun and even though it poured (it always rains in Ireland) my day couldn’t be any better!

I made a short clip of our trip to Killarney!

Have fun watching them!

    Carola:

Heyya! Good to know you're enjoying it at the southern-east part of the island. You should come and visit us in the north sometime! I might come over in march or april also, so would be nice to meet! But good to hear your classes are interesting, and it's good you're still clinging onto those other boring classes just for the language part haha. Do you have a lot of work to do there? I'm really jealous about those irish classes, sounds awesome.. Might just go on a course here somewhere, sounds grand! Two of my housemates actually teach Irish.

Well enjoy it over there and perhaps I'll see you soon :) :)
btw, killarney sounds absolutely awesome, I love that film (i know...) and it's cool that you've rented a bike, I kinda want to do the same here in the countryside of northern ireland (they do have that here :P)
Can't wait till your next blog (and videos, when I get the time to do so cause we have dongles here :()

    Hi Kelly,

Just catching up on my blog reading work! Having a great time in stab city -:) , judging from you blogs! So you're not only a musician, but an actor as well! You always discover new things about people when reading their blogs! Hope you took your walking shoes with you, considering the distances you have to walk! I do hope that you will be able to organise some hikes in the countryside, especially along the coast because it's beautiful over there! ( I walked the Dingle Way 5 years ago - higly recommended). Brilliant idea to rent mountain bikes: a lovely but tough way to explore the country! (yearning for your motorbike probably) Glad you seem to appreciate your Gaelic and psychology classes. You come across as an 'avid learner' -:) ! By the way, it looks as if you will have to 'keep an eye' on your friends, because they seem to mess up your flat and 'get lost' at parties all the time -:) ! Enjoy, Take care, Slán leat!,
